Representing Leonardo da Vinci’s betrothal portrait of the forlorn 16 year old Florentine beauty and intellect, ‘Ginevra de Benci’, who, in 1474 was whispered to be a deeply reluctant bride. The inscription Iuniperus, meaning a juniper sprig, (an old symbol of sorrow and pain), and Virtvtem Forma Decorat – ‘Beauty Adorns Virtue’, are painted on the reverse of the portrait board.
A 3″ long antiqued pewter pendant of an intricately carved Baroque outer frame, set with a large, black Swarovski crystal surrounded by a finely etched brass frame at its centre, and a black Swarovski crystal teardrop suspended beneath.
On a double, draped trace chain with an overall length of 16″ (41cm) plus a 35mm extender.
